FROM EFFICIENCY TO SUSTAINABILITY: THE DUAL IMPACT OF DIGITALIZATION
Today, the logistics sector is undergoing a data- driven transformation that goes beyond physical movement. In an era of rapidly intensifying competition, it is just as important to be in the right place at the right time as it is to do so in a smart, efficient and sustainable manner. Digitalization is at the heart of this transformation.
At Akca Logistics, we approach digital transformation as a “value creation” process; we view every digitalization project as an efficiency project and every efficiency project as a sustainability project. For example, by implementing route optimization applications, we reduce our operational costs while lowering fuel consumption to improve our environmental impact. We are re-evaluating every process, from how orders are picked in the warehouse to vehicle routing. As processes become simpler and faster, our energy consumption decreases and resource usage is balanced thanks to the algorithms we’ve developed and the enhanced system infrastructure. Even the savings achieved in consumables create a tangible impact on sustainability.
Digitalization also brings another critical area into focus: preventing waste. The service sector, which includes the logistics industry, is responsible for approximately one-fourth of food waste in Türkiye. Through digitalization and effective operational management, significant contributions to sustainability can be made, particularly in food and raw material logistics.
However, global disruptions are reshaping this landscape. Wars, pandemics and supply chain disruptions rapidly drive up costs, while any development occurring anywhere in the world can alter logistics balances. For this reason, the “near-shoring” approach— which involves locating production closer to consumption points—is gaining increasing importance. The need to establish shorter and more resilient supply chains is repositioning logistics as a strategic priority. Türkiye, however, holds a strong advantage in this transformation. The ability to reach over 60 countries within a four-hour flight radius can translate into significant potential when combined with the right strategies. I believe that if this advantage is properly leveraged, our country can play a more decisive role in global trade.
