TO WHAT EXTENT ARE WE READY FOR THE TRANSFORMATIONS AND CHANGES THAT WILL OCCUR WITH THE EFFECT OF THE EGD? WHAT KIND OF DUTIES DO THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR HAVE IN THIS REGARD? In Turkey, projects that are processed in "voluntary carbon markets" are being developed, works on resource use and waste management are performed with the Zero Waste Project, and carbon trading is carried out with the PMR project. However, considering the impact area of the transformation to be experienced within the scope of the EGD, the lack of sufficient awareness of the industries requires all industries to follow the regulations particularly within the scope of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and emission reduction more closely. Because, in the awareness and preparedness survey conducted by DEİK on member industrial organizations, it was seen that the awareness on the EGD is high but does not have a sufficient level of depth, and practices such as carbon footprint measurement, Environmental Product Declaration, Carbon Disclosure Project reports are not common enough. In order for Turkey to reach the desired level of preparation, having public and industrial unions to carrying out informative activities on the issue is the first step to be taken in this regard. The private sector should be informed of the changes to occur with the effect of the EGD, and technical and financial support should be provided in terms of regulations to be implemented. WHAT IS THE EUROPEAN GREEN DEAL (EGD)? HOW AND WHY WAS IT INTRODUCED? Climate change and the destruction of the natural environment pose a threat to the whole world. Against this threat, the European Union has taken an important step and introduced the European Green Deal (EGD) as a new strategy for the sustainable growth of the EU. Offering a comprehensive framework for the transition to a modern, resource-efficient, and competitive economy, the EGD was introduced by the European Commission as "Europe's new growth strategy" on December 11, 2019. Prepared in order to leave a more liveable world to future generations by preventing global warming and climate change, the EGD has 3 main goals: In order to achieve these goals, regulations focusing on resource efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in production, consumption, living, and working styles will be implemented.
